Differences by Region

This section presents some observations about regional differences in the residential survey results. These were identified after cross-tabulating the results with respect to region of the respondent. Note that the cross-tabulated data is an aggregate of all three regions in the MTA service area. All data is originally-sourced and tailored to the research objectives.

The comparisons shown here are between Mat-Su and Eagle River / Chugiak. Because Denali only makes up 4% of population, it was not included in this comparison.

The charts in this section are grouped into one of the categories shown below.


Demographics

Between Mat-Su and the Eagle River / Chugiak region:

  • Mat-Su had a higher proportion of older, retired people.
  • Mat-Su had lower income, but this may be explained by the older, retired population.
  • 18% of Eagle River / Chugiak residents make over $150k, but only 8% of Mat-Su residents do.
  • Mat-Su had more couples living without children, but may be explained by the older, retired population.

Carrier Information

Regarding the internet provider:

  • Twice as many households in Mat-Su use MTA vs. GCI (45% vs 25%).
  • Twice as many households in Eagle River use GCI vs. MTA (72% vs. 36%).
  • 10% of households in Mat-Su use a hotspot, 0% do so in Eagle River.

Regarding the length of time the respondent had been with the internet provider:

  • 38% of households in Eagle River have been with their ISP for over 10 years. In Mat-Su, only 25% of households have been with their ISP for over 10 years.

Regarding the type of services they receive from the internet provider:

  • 99% of households in Eagle River have internet, 91% in Mat-Su.
  • 70% stream video in Eagle River, 56% in Mat-Su.
  • 64% have cable/satellite TV in Eagle River, 54% in Mat-Su.
  • 46% have landline in Eagle River, 36% in Mat-Su.

Decision Process

Regarding who made the decision to choose one internet provider over another:

  • 64% of Eagle River made decision by themselves, 52% in Mat-Su.
  • 17% of Mat-Su decision makers were influenced by another adult, whereas only 8% in Eagle River were in the same situation.

Regarding the source of information when choosing an internet provider:

  • 8% of households in Eagle River got info from “articles, blogs, reviews online”, compared to 4% who did so in Mat-Su.
  • 32% of Eagle River went to ISP retail store, compared to 19% who did so in Mat-Su.
  • 8% of Eagle River used social media, compared to 4% who did so in Mat-Su.
  • 11% of Eagle River used advertising, compared to 7% who did so in Mat-Su.

Decision Factors

Regarding the factors contributing to the final decision:

  • 51% of Mat-Su said price was very important, compared to 37% in Eagle River.
  • 52% of Mat-Su said speed was very important, compared to 41% in Eagle River. However, that difference is accounted for by adding the “Somewhat Important” category.
  • 65% of Mat-Su said availability was very important, compared to 54% Eagle River.
  • 20% of Eagle River said reliability contributed very little to decision, compared to 11% in Mat-Su.
  • 43% of Mat-Su said customer service contributed very much, whereas only 28% of Eagle River stated as much.
  • 37% of Mat-Su said company reputation contributed very much, whereas only 28% in Eagle River said so.

Regarding which activities are performed on the internet:

  • Social media is used more in Mat-Su—23% of residents use more than 3 hours. In Eagle River, only 12% of residents use more than 3 hours.
  • 22% of Mat-Su residents do NOT stream video, but only 13% of Eagle River residents do not.
  • 26% of Mat-Su residents do NOT use internet for news, but for Eagle River it’s only 18%.
  • Only 12% of Eagle River residents do NOT use internet for hobby, but for Mat-Su, it’s 20%.
  • 12% of Eagle River residents use internet for hobby over 3 hours, but for Mat-Su, it’s 7%.
  • 37% of Mat-Su residents do not use internet for music, but it’s 27% for Eagle River.

Service Factors

Regarding the factors that are important for internet service:

  • 18% of Mat-Su residents said ‘parental controls’ were very important, but only 13% in Eagle River thought this.
  • 18% of Eagle River residents said ‘parental controls’ were not at all important, but 12% in Mat-Su thought the same.
  • 29% of Mat-Su residents believe ‘data backup’ is very important, but only 20% in Eagle River think this. 13% of Eagle River residents think this is somewhat unimportant or not important, whereas 3% of Mat-Su feel the same.
  • 41% of Mat-Su residents said ‘troubleshooting’ was very important, but 32% of Eagle River said the same.

Regarding television use:

  • 18% of Mat-Su residents do NOT watch TV or stream video content online, compared to 11% in Eagle River.
  • 43% of Eagle River residents watch ‘TV, movies, or other video content’ on cable TV, but only 23% do so in Mat-Su.
  • 18% of Mat-Su residents use Satellite TV, compared to 12% of Eagle River.
  • 70% of Eagle River residents stream video, but only 61% do this in Mat-Su.
  • 31% of Eagle River residents watch non-subscription content, but 22% do so in Mat-Su.
  • 11% in Eagle River residents watch TV over 11 hours, compared to 5% in Mat-Su.
